Your ASL Instructor

Hello, world! My name is Shanna Sorrells. I was born and raised in the D.C. area. I studied Education and Theatre at Smith College as an undergraduate and have lived all over the country since. I am Deaf and certified in teaching ASL for K-12 in the state of Virginia. I have nearly a decade of teaching experience in the classroom for middle school, high school, and college. I have been doing ASL tutoring for even longer. I also have a Master’s degree in Theatre Education from the University of Northern Colorado. Additionally, I currently teach theatre for all ages at a children’s theatre company in the D.C. area. I love to utilize my theatre background throughout my teaching process and I strongly believe that immersion is key for language learning. That “aha” moment on my students’ faces is what keeps me in love with teaching. I am excited to take advantage of reaching even more students as our world becomes increasingly digital and global. Now education is right at our fingertips! Your location is NBD. How cool is that?

Curious about my theatre work as well? Click on the link below to see my recent project creating devised theater work with an ensemble of Deaf adults who have little or no previous theatre experience in the D.C. region.
